A shipping method may be unsuitable above a certain weight even when it still appears at checkout. Parcel services have limits, economy options may exclude oversized orders, and a local courier may accept only small consignments. If an ineligible option remains visible, merchants need either to hide it or stop checkout with a clear correction.
To restrict a Shopify shipping method by cart weight, combine the selected shipping method with a cart-weight threshold in a checkout validation. Use AND logic so the cart is blocked only when both the ineligible method and prohibited weight are present.
Restricting is not the same as hiding
A CartBlock validation can prevent checkout from completing and explain which shipping option the shopper must change. It does not necessarily remove the rate from the shipping-method list.
Choose the experience that matches the requirement:
| Desired result | Best-fit control |
|---|---|
| Rate should never appear above the weight threshold | Shipping profile, carrier rate, or delivery customization |
| Rate can remain visible, but checkout must stop with an explanation | CartBlock validation |
| No shipping option is valid above the threshold | Cart-weight validation plus an operational alternative |
Review shipping profiles first. If the rate can be configured accurately at its source, hiding an invalid option can be smoother than presenting an error after selection.
Define the weight policy
Write down:
- the exact shipping method label;
- the maximum eligible weight;
- the store’s product weight unit;
- whether packaging weight is included;
- the markets, zones, and currencies affected; and
- the alternative method the shopper should select.
Shopify weight-based shipping rates can use product weight plus default-package weight. That does not prove CartBlock cart weight includes packaging. Verify the app field separately; missing weights and unit conversion can undermine either calculation.
How to configure the validation with CartBlock
Example policy:
Economy Shipping is available only when cart weight is 20 kg or less.
Invalid state:
Block checkout when selected shipping method is Economy Shipping AND cart weight is greater than 20 kg.
The exact field names and eligibility may vary. CartBlock documented selected-delivery workflow uses Advanced Validation and is Shopify Plus-only; confirm eligibility in the current rule builder.
1. Create an Advanced Validation
Open CartBlock from Shopify admin and create a multi-condition validation. Name it Economy Shipping — maximum 20 kg.
2. Add the shipping-method condition
Select the chosen-shipping-method input and match the exact label shown at checkout. Similar labels such as Economy, Economy International, and Economy (3–5 days) should not be assumed to be equivalent.
If rates are renamed by market, test each live label.
3. Add the cart-weight condition
Choose the cart-weight field and block weights above the threshold. If 20 kg is valid, use greater than 20 kg rather than greater than or equal to 20 kg.
Confirm the unit used by the condition. Do not enter 20 assuming kilograms if the rule expects grams or pounds.
4. Join both conditions with AND
The correct logic is:
- selected shipping method matches Economy Shipping; AND
- cart weight is above 20 kg.
OR logic could block every heavy order even when the shopper selects an eligible freight service, or every Economy order regardless of weight.
5. Add a corrective message
For example:
Economy Shipping is available for carts up to 20 kg. Select Standard Freight to continue.
Name an alternative only if it is actually available for every affected address and cart. Otherwise say, “Choose another available shipping method.”
6. Save and verify checkout data
Save the rule and confirm any checkout app block or data-synchronization setting required by the installed CartBlock workflow. Then reopen the rule to review the method, unit, operator, threshold, grouping, and message.
Test weights and shipping zones
Create controlled test carts at:
- just below the threshold;
- exactly at the threshold;
- just above the threshold; and
- far above the threshold.
For each cart, select the restricted and allowed methods. Repeat the tests for the shipping zones, markets, subscriptions, local delivery settings, and accelerated checkout paths used by the store.
Also verify product data. A product with no weight, a bundle whose component weights are not represented, or packaging not included in the calculation can make the evaluated cart lighter than the physical shipment.
Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify hide a shipping rate by weight?
Shipping profiles and rate conditions may handle some weight-based availability directly. If a rate still appears and must be conditionally rejected, a checkout validation can block the invalid method-and-weight combination.
Does CartBlock remove the shipping method?
A validation blocks checkout and shows an error; it should not be described as hiding the method. Use a delivery customization or shipping configuration when the rate must disappear.
Which weight unit should I enter?
Use the unit expected by the current rule builder and verify it with a controlled cart. Product, package, and rule units must agree.
Can I create different limits for different shipping methods?
Yes, create a clearly named rule for each method and threshold when supported. Separate rules are usually easier to test and maintain than a dense group of OR branches.
Match the checkout option to the shipment it can carry
The safest rule pairs one precisely matched shipping method with one verified cart-weight threshold. Join them with AND, give the shopper a viable alternative, and test the underlying product-weight data as carefully as the rule itself.
Check CartBlock current plan eligibility and conditions, then test the selected-delivery and cart-weight rule before launch.
